Prevention, Early Detection & Assessment of Suspicious Skin Lesions
Dermato-oncology focuses on the assessment of moles, pigmented lesions and other skin changes that may require investigation for skin cancer or precancerous disease. Early recognition is particularly important because skin cancers can present in different ways and may initially resemble harmless lesions.
A consultation may involve examination of a specific lesion or a broader skin assessment depending on the patient’s history and concerns. Dermoscopy can be used where appropriate to provide a magnified view of structures and patterns that are not visible to the naked eye.
Particular attention is given to new, changing, unusual or symptomatic lesions, as well as to patients who may require closer surveillance because of personal history, family history, multiple moles or other risk factors.

Assestment & Management!
When a lesion appears suspicious, further evaluation may be recommended. Depending on the clinical findings, this can include close monitoring, biopsy, removal of the lesion or referral for appropriate specialist management.
Patients are also encouraged to be aware of changes in their own skin. A lesion that is new, changing in size, shape or colour, repeatedly bleeding, failing to heal or otherwise behaving differently from surrounding lesions should be medically assessed.

Treatment recommendations are made after medical assessment and are tailored to the individual patient. Where additional investigation, another specialty or a different treatment pathway is more appropriate, this can form part of the overall management plan.
